DJ Vajra - 2011 DMC Mixing Champion

When I was growing up I was obsessed with scratch DJing and the DMC championships.  For those of you that don’t know the DMC championships is where DJ’s all over the world battle it out over 2 turntables to see who has the skills to become world champion.  This isn’t just about mixing 2 records together but about creating new beats, edits, remixes and scratches on the fly.  In the old days there would be a whole pile of carefully marked out vinyl records where the Dj would chop and change to get new songs to cut up, these days due to computer programs like Serato and Traktor you are able to line up your own range of tracks and samples on your laptop that will in turn send a signal to 2 time coded vinyl records on the record decks.  This means gone are the days of not only carrying bags of records but also gone is the need to use more than the 2 pieces of time coded vinyl.  This is means DJ’s in the competiton are being more creative than ever, 20 years ago when I followed these championships religiously the DJ’s were good, very good.  Nowadays the DJ’s are unbelievable, so fast and technical you even wonder if anything they are doing is in fact humanly possible.  This video is of this year’s world champion American DJ Vajra who is undoubtedly one of the all-time greats. Recently at the DMC finals he blew away the competition and one could question the skills that he displayed.  This routine was specially recorded for the Internet but is close to the routine he did to take the world crown at the O2 in London earlier this month.

Due to the fact that I’ve been rather busy this week and haven’t watched any films I’m going to share with you a short video.  As some of you may know I’ve been known to bust the odd move from time to time throughout my life.  Whether it was as a break-dancer as a kid, dancing along to the moves of Michael Jackson, and even more recently on  SCD.  Well this video made my jaw drop, I showed to the missus who knows a thing or two about dancing and she simply could not believe it.  Not only does the guy pop with precision and ease he also manages to slow down time…watch it and you’ll see what I mean.

Elin (my daughter) choose the video this week and I’m still not sure what to make of it.  It’s quite extraordinary but I dread to think what she will be like in her teens.  Pop stardom or the Betty Ford Clinic beckons.
